Eye-Fi connects to photo/video sites via NTT Com's Wi-Fi for free

Eye-Fi Japan K.K. announced on June 25 that you can now use its SD memory card, the Eye-Fi Share, for digital camera to upload photos you take to photo sharing/storing sites or your PC via NTT Communications (NTT Com) Corp.'s Wi-Fi service for free.

The Wi-Fi service is called “HOTSPOT connect,” which is available around Japan.

The HOTSPOT connect service is available as well when you upload videos using Eye-Fi's SD memory card, the Eye-Fi Share Video, for camcorder.

As many as 200 people lined up in droves for iPhone 3G S

The iPhone 3G S was released on June 26 in Japan from Softbank Mobile (SBM) Corp.

In front of SBM's flagship shop at Omotesando, Tokyo, about 200 people formed a long queue to get an iPhone 3G S smartphone at seven o'clock in the morning on June 26, the time the phone began to sell at the shop.

The Mainichi Newspapers, one of the major newspaper publishers in Japan, has set up its official accounts on Twitter.

Mainichi operates one account for Japanese-language news and another account for English-language news.

Louis Vuitton Japan gets on Mobage-town

Louis Vuitton Japan (LVJ) began to deliver its own online game for cellphone on Mobage-town, Japan's mobile game/SNS site giant, on June 25.

The game, Precious Cargo, is intended to promote LVJ's new products and attract customers to its brick-and-mortar shop, LOUIS VUITTON /underground/, which is temporarily open in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan.

Total solar eclipse to be carried live to Daiei supermarkets

The Daiei, Inc. will broadcast the total solar eclipse live from Amami, Kagoshima Prefecture, to some of its supermarkets via the communication lines in high-definition on July 22.

The eclipse, which will take place for the first time in 46 years in Japan, is expected to attract customers while the digital signage system is working together.

More than one million units sold in the first three days--iPhone 3G S

Can you wait to get an iPhone 3G S smartphone?

Apple inc. said on June 22 that more than one million units of the iPhone 3G S sold in the first three days since it was launched on June 19 in the U.S.

In Japan, the iPhone 3G S will hit the shelves on June 26.

One-day use of Mobile WiMax

UQ Communications Inc.--poised to put its commercial Mobile WiMax service, UQ WiMAX, in production on July 1--announced on June 8 that it will begin to provide the one-day service plan, UQ 1Day, on October 1.

The plan will let you use its Mobile WiMax service for 24 hours at ¥600 without having to pay a registration fee, as well as its Wi-Fi service (UQ Wi-Fi).

How globally is a broadband connection proliferating in households?

Strategy Analytics, Inc. reported on June 18 the ranking of broadband household penetration on a country-by-country basis.

In the first place of the ranking was South Korea with 95% of households hooked on broadband.

Japan was in the 16th place with 64% and the U.S. 20th with 60%.

Three-dimensional Google Earth

Google Japan Inc. announced on June 10 that it has launched 3-dimensional images on its location-based service Google Earth.

The images cover urban areas of Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo as of the launch.

Edy will be available at Seven-Eleven stores

The company operating the e-money system Edy, bitWallet, Inc., and Japan's convenience store giant Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd. announced on June 9 that the Edy e-money will be available at Seven-Eleven stores around Japan from October.

At Seven-Eleven stores, Seven-Eleven Japan has implemented its own e-money system, nanaco, only so far.

Digital appliances are pervading home (2)--DVD and camera

The result of survey that was conducted by the Cabinet Office in March shows how pervasive digital appliances have been in homes in Japan.

According to the result, DVD players/recorders are owned by 73.1 percent of Japan's households and digital cameras 69.2 percent, both of which are 1.5 times higher than four years ago.

Softbank Mobile (SBM) Corp. announced Tuesday that SBM dealers around Japan will begin to accept a reservation for the iPhone 3G S on June 18.

Those who have made the reservation can get it on or after June 26 and will be informed of the date by the dealer.

Nintendo DS connected to Wi-Fi at McDonald's

Nintendo Co., Ltd. will begin to provide its Wi-Fi service, Nintendo Zone, for the Nintendo DS series at McDonald's and Tsukuba Express stations on June 19.

The service will allow you to play a game online with people through Wi-Fi and download and use Nintendo's own content for free, without having to enter an ID or a password.

Digital appliances are pervading home (1)--Flat-screen TV

The Cabinet Office conducted a survey on how pervasive digital appliances have been in homes in March.

The survey result shows flat-screen TVs are found in 54.9 percent of households in Japan.

This is the first time for the number to exceed 50 percent.

Survival in digitization of TV in Japan (32)--CATV keeps on going with analog TV?

The committee on information and telecommunications, one of the advisory panels to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), on June 22 compiled a draft of a report on the transition from analog to digital terrestrial television broadcasting due on July 24, 2011.

The draft says CATV stations should temporarily convert the digital TV airwaves to analog signals so that the subscribers can watch the relayed TV broadcasts on an analog TV set even after July 24, 2011, for several years.

The committee is expected to adopt the draft at its general meeting on June 25 and submit it to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Survival in digitization of TV in Japan (31)--Turn your eyes to U.S. again

The Nielsen Co. announced on June 10 (U.S. Time) how households in the U.S. have been ready for the transition from analog to digital television broadcasting that is due on June 12, according to its survey.

The survey result shows that as many as 2.8 million households have not prepared equipment necessary for the transition.

These households account for about 2.5% of the total.

Yahoo! Japan phishing email is proliferating

The Council of Anti-Phishing Japan announced on June 8 that it has confirmed a new phishing fraud committed by those who pretend to be Yahoo! Japan.

The pretenders try to lead Yahoo! Japan's members to a fake website by sending them an email and make them enter their personal information including credit-card number on the website.

iPhone 3G S hits Japan June 26

Softbank Mobile (SBM) Corp. announced the prices of Apple's new iPhone, the iPhone 3G S, on Tuesday.

When you subscribe to SBM's “iPhone for everybody campaign” service that obliges you to continue the subscription for two years, you will pay ¥480 for the 16GB model or ¥960 for the 32GB model every month for 24 months.

That means an iPhone 3G S handset itself will in effect cost you ¥11,520 for the 16GB model or ¥23,040 for the 32GB model.

The iPhone 3G S is expected to hit the shelves of SBM dealers on June 26.
