Facebook released Japan-version of Places

Facebook released a location-based service in Japan on September 14.

The service “Spot” is based on the Places features that have already been provided in the U.S.

The Spot for the iPhone allows the user to download its dedicated application from touch.facebook.com and install it in her/his iPhone.

To use the Spot features on a smartphone other than the iPhone, the user will need to access touch.facebook.com to ‘check in.’

Kishiwada Danjiri Festival to be broadcast live to mobiles

Cable TV Kishiwada (TVK), a CATV service provider in the southern part of Osaka, and Japan Digital Serve (JDS) Corp., Tokyo, Japan-based CATV solution provider, announced on September 13 that they will broadcast the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival live to mobile devices on September 18 and 19 on a trial basis.

The broadcast will be viewable via the Internet on cellphones from NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile around Japan.

VAIO to display 3D images (3) -- Cyber-shot images can be shown

The prototype of a 3D VAIO that was exhibited at the Sony Dealer Convention 2010 showed 3D images shot by Sony's digital camera Cyber-shot.

The 3D VAIO will also display 3D images extracted from digital broadcast programs and Blu-ray disc content.

VAIO to display 3D images (2) -- Glasses are required

The prototype of a 3D VAIO was exhibited at the Sony Dealer Convention 2010

Sony is expected to put the 3D VAIO on Japan's market in spring in 2011.

It has a 16.4-inch LCD screen, based on the VAIO F series PC.

The 3D display scheme employs a frame sequential system in which the image for the right eye and the image for the left eye are alternatively shown at the frequency of 120 Hz.

The scheme requires a viewer to wear special glasses that synchronize with the display's switch-over cycle.

The display has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Toy chopper is controlled by iPhone

Paris, France-based Parrot SA announced on September 9 that it will launch a toy chopper that can be remote-controlled by the iPhone/iPad/iPod in Japan on September 16.

The chopper AR.Drone is Wi-Fi-enabled and the application will be available from the App Store.

Sony Corp. announced on September 8 that it will launch a 3D-enabled VAIO in spring in 2011.

A prototype of the VAIO was exhibited at the Sony Dealer Convention 2010.

Xbox 360 receives videos from Universal and Paramount

Microsoft Japan announced on September 8 that it will begin to deliver videos provided by Bandai Channel, NBC Universal, and Paramount Pictures to Xbox 360 users this fall.

The videos will be delivered as part of its video delivery service Zune Video that is dedicated to the Xbox 360.

Users of the Zune Video service are expected to enjoy HD videos with 1080 pixels and 5.1 ch surround sound.
