Survival in digitization of TV in Japan (10)―Confusing PR activities

Are the public relations campaigns enough to announce the complete transition from the analog to the digital terrestrial broadcasting in Japan?

One of the announcements is now being done by the singer/actor, a member of Japan's famous music group, SMAP, on TV quite often.

However, the announcement may get across to those who understand what the transition is.

Survival in digitization of TV in Japan (9)―Charge for discarding CRT TV

Are you now watching the Olympic Games on a flat panel TV, LCD or PDP?

Now that flat panel TVs are replacing CRT TVs and the complete transition from the analog to the digital terrestrial broadcasting is coming in three years in Japan, you may need to consider disposing of your existing CRT TVs.

These CRT TVs are recycled by consumer-electronics manufactures and the consumer pays for the recycle.

The recycle charge will be renewed in November.

The three consumer-electronics manufactures, Sony Corp., Sharp Corp., and Toshiba Corp., announced August 8 that a CRT TV with a screen of 15-inch or less will be recycled at ¥1,785, reduced from ¥2,835.

A CRT TV with a screen of 16-inch or more will be recycled at ¥2,835, the same price as at present.

Will you keep your CRT TV dedicated to the analog broadcasting with a digital-to-analog converter attached to it even after the complete transition?

Survival in digitization of TV in Japan (8)―Countdown starts

Are you really watching Chi-deji, or a terrestrial digital TV broadcast now?

Analog and digital TV programs are now simultaneously broadcast.

On July 24―just in three years, the broadcasting will completely migrate from the existing analog system to the new digital one in Japan―NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) began to display the logo “アナログ” (analog) on the top right corner of the TV screen image brought through its analog general channel and analog educational channel.

The logo allows you to check it out if you are watching a digital broadcast or not.
