On December 1, 2003, the terrestrial digital TV broadcasting, or chideji began in Japan.
And on December 1, 2009, the countdown counter indicated “600 days” to the complete transition from the analog to the chideji and digital BS system.
At the chideji 6th anniversary event, Prime Minister Yukio HATOYAMA showed his firm resolve to complete the transition by July 24, 2011.

NTT Plala Inc. and I-Cast, Inc. announced Thursday that it will begin to relay terrestrial digital TV broadcasts in some areas of Fukuoka Prefecture through their IPTV service Hikari TV on the NGN platform Flet's Hikari Next on December 8.
NTT Plala and I-Cast have already begun the relay offering in Osaka, Tokyo, Aichi, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Hyogo, Kyoto, and Hokkaido Prefectures so far.

“The sticker that indicates apartment's readiness for the reception of chideji, or the terrestrial digital TV broadcasting will be applied for by the owner or the management company of the apartment that wants to attract those who are looking for such an apartment,” says the “Support Center for TV Viewers” under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC).
The center is also expected to use this sticker in order to efficiently do its activities for promotion of chideji, which targets apartments.

Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) announced on October 22 that the number of terrestrial digital broadcasting receivers that were shipped in Japan in September 2009 reached 1,831,000.
The number is up 37.5% from the same month last year.

TV sets which are adaptive to terrestrial digital broadcasting are owned by 61% of people living in the Tokyo metropolitan area and in the Keihanshin (Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe) area as of July 2009, according to a survey result.
One-seg cellphones are owned by 55.2% in the same areas.
